Web Home Page: Much of Diepwalle State Forest consists of flat to gently undulating country covered by indigenous forest and montane fynbos (heath). The main attraction of this forest is the 'Elephant Walk' which traverses some of the best-preserved natural forest in South Africa. The trail passes a number of large Outeniqua yellowwoods and takes one through areas of moist high-forest comprising large stinkwood, real yellowwood, ironwood, hard pear, white pear and numerous other canopy-forming species. The area also forms part of the remaining home range of the so-called 'Knysna elephants'. Only five survive, and the chance of seeing one of these shy animals is remote. Mammals more likely to be spotted are vervet monkey, bushbuck and baboon. Location: Far south-eastern part of the province; north-east of Knysna. Access: From Knysna follow the N2 eat-wards towards Plettenberg Bay; after 7 km turn left onto the R339 towards Avontuur and Uniondale, and continue for about 16 km. Diepwalle is clearly signposted. The R339 becomes graded gravel about 6 km from the N2. Accommodation: An overnight hut (ca be used only by hikers on the Outeniqua Trail). Other facilities: Elephant Walk, an 18 km circular trail with shorter alternatives (permits required); picnic sites. Open: Throughout the year. Opening time: 06h00 to 18h00
